43 divers turn out for first Flag Day for Scuba Divers

LOCK HAVEN — On the morning of Sunday, Sept. 6, those driving across the Veteran’s Memorial Bridge in Lock Haven noticed an abnormal amount of dive flags in the water. The red flags with diagonal white stripes, lets boaters and jet skiers know that there are scuba divers below the surface and to maintain a safe distance.

This year due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, the Lock Haven Area Jaycees had to cancel their annual boat regatta, which in years past included the Night Dive Treasure Hunt sponsored by Lock Haven Jaycees and Citizen’s Hose Fire Company.

Keeping with the old tradition of divers and Labor Day, local scuba center owner Rich Best wanted something safe for divers of all experience levels to participate in.

“It’s pretty hard to catch the virus underwater and social distancing was easy,” Best said. Taking advantage of the extra weekend of diving this summer, Best said he started promoting Flag Day for Scuba Divers.

And the weather couldn’t have been any better.

It turned out to be a great day to have a little fun and show the community just how many divers contribute to their economy and use these fantastic facilities that Lock Haven and Woodward Township have to offer, Best said.

In the end, 43 divers showed up to dive Jay Street basin. Some traveled over 100 miles to participate in this first-time ever event.
